NILAND / MECCA — October 27, 2026. California State Parks is developing a long-term General Plan for Salton Sea State Recreation Area, addressing a destination shaped by shrinking water levels, changing habitat and limited recreation infrastructure. The planning process began in summer 2025 and is expected to take about three years, according to an official parks planning update.
Why the plan matters
The park opened to the public in 1955 and was designated a State Recreation Area in 1963. State Parks says it has not previously had a completed comprehensive General Plan of this kind. The new document is intended to guide future recreational access, environmental protection, facility investment, visitor services and long-range management.
This planning project is not a promise to refill the entire Salton Sea, to restore old boating conditions or to reopen a particular campground on a specified date. Proposed park improvements will also need to be evaluated through an environmental impact report under the California Environmental Quality Act.
Public workshops have taken place
State Parks invited residents, visitors, tribal representatives and community organizations to workshops in February 2026. Those dates have passed. People who want to participate now can sign up for project updates and submit questions using the park’s current General Plan webpage rather than assuming the February meetings are still upcoming.
For communities near Niland, Bombay Beach and Mecca, planning questions include trails and viewing areas, accessibility, habitat protection, cultural interpretation and whether visitor facilities are practical in a location with high heat, dust and changing shorelines.
Don’t confuse planning with current park access
The park’s live public notice continues to identify Mecca Beach Campground as closed for repairs, while a separate main campground remains open for day use and camping under its restrictions. The state also specifies that dogs are allowed on leash in developed roads and campground areas but not on beaches or trails. Check current conditions and site-specific rules before traveling.
The existence of a General Plan process does not establish which recreational facilities are open on any given day. For camping reservations, use the official park and reservation system rather than relying on older tourism articles.
